Advice for parents with regard to penmanship

Before your child begins using a pen

For many children their motor skills develop more slowly than their understanding of how to complete physical actions. If this occurs with using a pen it could lead to your child feeling frustrated if he or she* cannot perform physical actions that he or she knows mentally how to complete. (When this happens you might notice pens being thrown about, paper being torn up, or other self-destructive behaviours.) With this in mind, before you help your child to use a pen, you will first need to develop his or her large and fine motor skills. *(I will use the term she rather than ‘he or she’ going forwards for simplicity.)

  • You can assist your child to develop large motor skills by encouraging her to climb and catch balls.
  • You can help your child to develop fine motor skills by asking her to pick up small objects.

Free drawing of any type with pens and pencils will help your child to develop the muscles required to use pens and pencils. To encourage her to continue for longer periods, use a commentary approach while she uses her imagination to free draw. A commentary approach offers no advice (e.g., “Use the red pen”) or criticism (“I think a blue pen would have been better”) just your description of what is happening. For example, “I can see that you have picked up the blue pen, and you are making a circle with it”.

Before using tracing exercises encourage your child to draw patterns and shapes in flour, sand, or rice, and help her to trace letters with her fingers.
Use handwriting form guides to help your child to acquire the fine motor movements required for writing.

When your child is ready to begin using a pen

  • Find a quiet place for your child to practice using a pen: away from all distractions.
  • Penmanship requires a lot of mental effort from your child. In the early stages of helping your child to use a pen, use our books for short periods only. As time progresses, you can gradually increase the time you spend helping your child with his or her writing.
  • Practise using a pen at a time of day when your child’s attention is the strongest.
  • When your child traces letters or shapes use encouragement and praise and avoid criticism. Criticism will lead to your child developing a negative relationship with writing.
  • Use rewards after your child has completed small sections of work. Gradually increase the amount of work required to achieve a reward before offering further rewards. Rewards can be stickers, certificates, or small things that your child really likes. (Certificate templates have been placed in the back of most of these books for you to print out.)
  • Consider purchasing an ergonomic pen for your child to use. The use of this pen can be used as a reward after your child has mastered basic tracing exercises with his or her finger.
